Year 2 Transition
Transition to Higher Bebington Junior School
At Higher Bebington Junior School, we recognise that the transition from infant to junior school is a significant milestone in your child’s learning journey. Moving from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2—whether this takes place within the same setting or across different schools—often involves a number of changes. These may include differences in the classroom environment, routines, and expectations. Learning typically becomes more structured, and children are encouraged to develop greater independence and take increased responsibility for their own learning.
We fully understand that this period of change can bring feelings of both excitement and uncertainty for children, parents, and carers. That’s why we are committed to ensuring that the transition is smooth, supportive, and successful for everyone involved.
Supporting the Transition
Preparation
As with any big change, preparation is key—both at home and from us as a school. Please take time to talk to your child about moving to Higher Bebington Junior School and what they might expect. Our school website offers plenty of information about our curriculum, including the subjects and topics they will explore.
As a school, our staff work closely with the staff from Town Lane Infant School to ensure a thorough handover takes place prior to the children arriving in September.
Transition Day
On Transition Day, at the start of July, the children will have the opportunity to visit us for the day. This important day allows them to meet their new teachers and other members of the HBJS staff, become familiar with their new classrooms, and learn about daily routines at the school. Most importantly, they will get to know key areas such as the playground, field, toilets, the dining hall and experience OPAL play!
To help our new Year 3 pupils settle in, we operate a ‘buddy’ system where each new child is paired with an older Year 5 student. This buddy acts as a friendly face both in the classroom and around the school. Throughout the year, buddy classes participate in joint activities and events to build connections. Additionally, children are assigned to school houses to foster a strong sense of belonging within our community.
This day is invaluable in helping to ease any anxieties and help the children feel excited about the new academic year ahead.
From September onwards…
From September onwards, we will support both you and your child in a variety of ways. At Higher Bebington Junior School, we firmly believe that positive relationships are the foundation of success—whether between your child and their teachers, other staff, and peers, or between parents and the school community.
We work diligently to ensure every child feels safe, happy, and eager to come to school. When children become confident and willing learners, the journey of education becomes much more rewarding for everyone involved.
Open communication is a priority from day one. We encourage you to share any worries or concerns with your child’s class teacher so they can be addressed promptly and effectively.
Through thoughtful planning, clear communication, and a nurturing environment, we aim to help every child feel confident and ready for this exciting new stage of their education. We look forward to this time of fresh challenges, new opportunities, and shared success as we continue working together to help each child thrive.
